Microsoft will NOT Allow It’s AI Software to Be Used to Create Pornography.

There is good news to report in the effort to resist the rapid and dangerous development of user-driven pornography generated by artificial intelligence (AI).  Last week, the CEO of Microsoft’s AI program announced that his company would not allow or promote the use of their technology to create pornography.  This is an extremely encouraging development, and Microsoft is to be commended for placing moral and humanitarian interests ahead of profits.

Tech giants are fiercely competing to become the dominant force in the immense new market for user-directed content generated by AI.  The past few weeks have revealed a “race to the bottom” search for profits regardless of consequence, as the major competitors ChatGPT, OpenAI, and Elon Musk’s xAI each announced that they would relax constraints that had previously prevented the use of their technology for written and image-based “erotica” or pornography.

Last Thursday, October 23, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman said the creation of seemingly conscious AI is already happening, primarily with “erotica” focused services:

You can already see it with some of these avatars and people leaning into the kind of sexbot erotica direction,” Suleyman said. “This is very dangerous, and I think we should be making conscious decisions to avoid those kinds of things.”

Street Grace strongly agrees with Microsoft’s position, and commend its decision.

Through our legislative advocacy, training, and education initiatives, Street Grace is actively engaged in the fight against the expanding pornography industry and commercial sex trade, and we urge you to join us.  We encourage you to:

  • Contact your state and federal legislators, urging them to introduce legislation prohibiting the production of AI pornography, as well as supporting current bills to enhance online protections against all obscene content.

  • Immediately boycott Chat GPT, Open AI, xAI, and any other platform that allows the generation of pornography. We also recommend the use of Microsoft and any other AI tools that do not allow generation of pornography.

  • Contribute to organizations such as Street Grace that oppose normalization of the sex trade and pornography.
