STOP Human Trafficking Act
Street Grace Supports Introduction of Supporting Transportation Operations that Prevent (STOP) Human Trafficking Act
Last week a bi-partisan human trafficking bill was introduced in Congress. U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), along with Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), introduced the Supporting Transportation Operations that Prevent (STOP) Human Trafficking Act. This legislation would improve the detection and prevention of human trafficking in our transportation sectors by authorizing recommendations made by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Advisory Committee, including:
Promoting counter-trafficking research and public-private information sharing;
Establishing an ongoing public awareness campaign based on evidence-backed models; and
Authorizing $10 million annually for USDOT human trafficking prevention grants to improve education and prevention efforts, train staff to identify signs of trafficking, and support survivors.
Street Grace applauds the introduction of this bill, as it is perfectly aligned with our priorities and the focus of our efforts: seeking to stop sex trafficking before it happens through interdiction, education, and training, and to provide crucial support to those already exploited in the sex trade. Our Transaction Intercept initiative is well suited to contribute to measuring and estimating sex trafficking prevalence, in addition to its primary aim of attacking this crime at its roots: the consumer level demand that provides every penny of revenue that motivates traffickers to exploit the vulnerable for their profit. Street Grace also operates a 24-hour hotline to help those at risk, and provides direct services that so far have assisted over 90,000 survivors.
Street Grace encourages support of this bill, and urges you contact the Senators and Representatives in your state’s Congressional delegation to pass this legislation.
